When I was younger, I watched The Real World almost religiously. I always thought that the concept of living in a house with a bunch of people you didn’t know in a city you weren’t familiar with miles from what was normal to you was just about the coolest concept on the planet. Everyone on the show always seems so older, so mature.
So the other day, I was flipping channels, and I saw that The Real World was on. I watched maybe four minutes of it before I turned it off, then thought back on all of the episodes I had watched earlier in my life.
The people on the show are my age or younger. They have no clue what they’re doing. And more often than not, life in the house is a chaotic mess. I find that people are rude and inconsiderate, that their maturity levels are astonishingly low, and that their lives are in no way amusing to me.
I think MTV was really ahead of the reality TV curve with The Real World, but for crying out loud – who on earth would watch that?

I used to watch it too and loved it. I think the last one I ever watched was my senior year in college. I can't even remember where they were then. London?
I have to confess that I don't even know what channel MTV is anymore. It's just not something that even interests me these days. Writing that made me feel very very old.

At 28, all the people on the Real World are now younger than me. I loved the first few seasons (NY, LA, Miami, Boston), but I kind of lost track of it when they went to London, though I watched some of Las Vegas (just b/c I love Vegas) and New Orleans. I've come to think of it as a pretty stupid concept now that I'm older, and I can't imagine what I ever liked about it. I've got to have a little competition in my reality show nowadays.
